May 8: IBA Stewardship Volunteer Event on International Migratory Bird Day.
(Saturday morning, 07:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.): Tanque Verde Wash at “Wentworth Rd. Crossing”. Three simultaneous activities. Stewardship: IBA Team(s)-Volunteers (earlier start: 0630): GPS-ing, Digital photographing, and detailing field notes on Arundo donax , dumping areas, erosion, bad fences, and other riparian habitat impacts on river reach, upstream & downstream from “crossing”, with shuttle to or from end of assigned river reach section, and all ending up at event site. Restoration: TAS volunteers: Major Arundo donax (invasive plant species) removal effort at the road crossing area of the wash and downstream to some extent. Outreach: Event table set up at road side-wash crossing with big sign, flyers and brochures to hand out to drivers crossing the wash, answer questions, and spotting scope trained on a bird nest, and binoculars available for use. Horseback riders also accessed. All these folks are people who live in the area, and know little about invasive plants potential negative riparian impacts, and the importance of the area to birds.
